Second Chance T.E.A.M. Mentors

Thank you for your interest in being a mentor for young man or woman who needs a second chance.  Mentors are trusted friends and guides.  They are also advocates and sources of accountability that young men and women coming out of incarceration will need.  We desire to do this by surrounding youth coming out of placement with a T.E.A.M. (Training – Encouragement – Advocacy – Mentoring)

Why the T.E.A.M. Mentoring model?

  • It builds a mentoring community among friends or small groups.
  • Lessens the pressure on a single mentor.
  • It builds a community around the mentee.

T.E.A.M. Mentoring model details:

  • Teams of four mentoring four mentees.
  • The mentoring is site-based
  • Group meets every week for an average of 1.5 hours (can meet for an hour of group time with ½ hour of one-on-one time.)
  • With 4×4 group of boys there should only be 1 female mentor, and vice versa.
  • Each mentor will have a role assisting mentee in either employment, education, social/recreation, and felt needs
  • S.O.Y. provides training and curriculum.
  • There will be a team leader within each group as a point person.

Our basic mentor qualifications/responsibilities for mentors in the Second Chance T.E.A.M.s program are:

  • Be at least 21 years of age or older.
  • Successfully complete our training and screening process.
  • Comfortable co-leading a group of four young men or young women on a weekly basis at a designated ministry site or large group activity location.
  • Ability to commit to volunteering 12 months.
  • Our mentors will spend an average of two hours a week with our program participants.
  • Regular communication with SOY Staff (each mentor will be assigned to a case manager who will be responsible for overseeing your group).
  • Agreement to attend at least two of our quarterly trainings offered each year.
  • Agreement to submit a monthly activity log (team leader).

SOY understands that mentoring is a big commitment. We work closely with our volunteers to prepare, encourage and support them in their relationships with kids needing a second chance. This happens through initial orientations, training, screening, on-going educational opportunities, staff contact and church ministry teams.
