Kim is fictitious but represents thousands of kids in Central and Southern Iowa who are impacted every day by incarceration or substance abuse whether it is where they live, family members who are locked-up or using, or perhaps they are youth who have been incarcerated themselves.
It places our children and youth at risk, but yet they are so full of hope and promise! Who knows what God has brought us through these children. Perhaps a doctor, pastor, teacher, police officer, Senator, evangelist or a future President. Maybe even a celebrity chef! Data shows that all kids benefit from the support of non-parental adults investing in the lives of kids. Data shows that kids are helped through mentoring by reducing their first-time drug and alcohol use, improving their relationships and academic performance, and reducing the likelihood that they will initiate violence. In addition, mentoring programs can provide these children with opportunities to develop a trusting relationship with a supportive, caring adult and a stable environment that can promote healthy values and strong families. Youth who have been arrested, mentors help provide necessary stability, support and encouragement as they transition back into the community.
Kids like Kim need a trust friend and guide. They need a mentor who will share life with them on a one-to-one basis. You can make a difference!
