Serve Our Youth is committed to providing resources and relationships to children of promise and their families throughout Central and Southern Iowa. We provide mentors for children, ages 4-18 who have been impacted by incarceration, live in an area where incarceration is prevalent or has been incarcerated themselves.
We understand that the child’s safety and well-being are a top priority for you. Because of this, and our shared concern for children of promise, we have a through screening process for our mentors before they are approved and matched with a child.
- Initial orientation with SOY.
- An application.
- Criminal background check (state & national)
- Child Abuse Background check
- Driving Record check
- Four written references
- One hour initial orientation and two hours of pre-match training
Our mentors are never expected to take the place of a parent or guardian, but provide support for the parent or guardian. What you can expect from our mentors:
- Weekly contact with their mentee.
- Additional support for the parent/guardian in raising their child.
- Communication with the parent/guardian regarding the activities they will be engaged in.
- All information shared by mentee will be held in confidence by our mentors.
- They will not take sides between parent/guardian and child.
- The encouragement of positive parent or guardian/child relationships.
