Des Moines Area December Mentor Training
If you have applied to become a mentor for our Amachi, Second Chance, or Prevention Through Mentoring you will need to complete training. In December training will be held on Saturday, December 10th, 2011 for those interested in mentoring through our Amachi or Second Chance programs. Those mentoring through Amachi will need to come to the Polk County Juvenile Detention Center (1548 Hull Ave, Des Moines, IA 50316).
Amachi Mentoring Training 8:00a-9:00a
This section of our training we’ll discuss common characteristics, themes and needs of children who have a parent in prison or who have been impacted by incarceration, and how we can best serve them. We’ll also explain our Amachi Mentoring programs – our expectations and the matching process. This will also include discussing common concerns with community-based mentoring.
Mentoring 101 – 9:00a-10:00a (this training is for all prospective mentors)
In this section of our training we discuss our roles in mentoring and qualities of successful mentors, SOY’s history and vision, our policies and procedures as they relate to our mentors, and how to best engage and support your mentee.
Second Chance Mentoring Training – 10:00a-11:00a (training for those interested in our Second Chance TEAMs Program).
In this section of our training we discuss juvenile system youth, understanding Iowa’s juvenile justice system, expectations and the matching process for Second Chance, how TEAMs will function and cover basics to facilitating groups (this is a group mentoring program).
To be a qualified mentor you need to complete Mentoring 101 and either the Amachi or Second Chance Mentoring training (depending on the program you want to be involved in).
