Mike and QuayVon
Mike and QuayVon were highlighted over at Iowa Mentoring Partnership:
When Mike Conlon and his mentee, QuayVon were initially matched through Serve Our Youth, they both recognized they were two people from completely different backgrounds and age groups. While Mike (47) grew up in Fort Dodge and now lives with his wife and children, QuayVon (10) has grown up in Des Moines and lives with his older brother and mother. Thus, spending time and simply “hanging out” together originally seemed like a daunting task. However, the result has been incredible.
In addition to spending time at Mike’s house and eating dinner with his family, the match also enjoys engaging in a multitude of diverse activities that appeal to both mentor and mentee. Among others, Mike and QuayVon spend their time attending movies, watching high school state basketball tournaments and Urbandale boy’s and girl’s soccer games, playing basketball and miniature golf, going to Tropical Sno and the Science Center of Iowa, walking in the Urbandale 4th of July parade as part of Scott Raecker’s team and eating dinner at one of their favorite restaurants, Godfathers.
While QuayVon has participated in baseball and football, he excels in arts and sciences, has a creative personality and is a very outgoing young person. QuayVon’s current career path is headed toward the World Wrestling Federation. However, as a backup plan, QuayVon would like to attend Iowa State University or Simpson College. Together, Mike and QuayVon are developing a friendship that will stand the test of time.
